Food Waste Pilot Program

Drop Off Site behind Township Hall

Starting November 1, 2025, Scio Township Hall began hosting a Food Waste Drop-off Station, which accepts food waste and compostable tableware for composting. This new program is intended to divert food waste, a major contributor to greenhouse gases, from municipal landfills. The Drop-Off Station is for food waste and compostable tableware only, no yard waste is accepted.

How Does It Work?
  1. Sign up to participate. This is a pilot program so it will be important to track number of participants.
  2. Watch this brief in-person education session to learn how it works.
  3. Set aside compostable items for transport to the Drop-off Station.
  4. Drop off your compost during Drop-off Station open hours:  Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 am - 6 pm and Saturdays, 10 am-4 pm.

Watch the orientation session.

Find out what materials are accepted (and what materials ARE NOT accepted) by downloading this flyer.

Choose BPI-certified compostable products for all the disposable tableware in your household or business. Find eligible brand names at products.bpiworld.org then purchase appropriate products in your local store.

Why Compost Food Scraps?

Composting diverts organic materials from landfills and septic systems, turns food waste into a nutrient-rich addition to soil that can replace chemical fertilizers and sequester carbon, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
