Fire Department Services

Fire Prevention Inspections & Fire Department Fees

The STFD has a fire safety inspection program to help reduce the risk of fire within the business community in Scio Township. The goal of the program is to identify areas within township businesses where there may be an increased risk of loss from fire, and to help correct those issues. The main component of this program involves having our Assistant Chief / Fire Marshal, Brandon Sears, perform a fire inspection of each commercial building and the businesses within. All businesses are required to have a current Chemical Survey & Emergency Contact Form on-file with the Fire Department.

Businesses are inspected every 1-3 years, depending on the type of business. Participation in the program is mandatory.

As provided for in the Scio Township Code of Ordinances, Chapter 2 Article V, the fee schedules are as follows:

Fire Investigations

The STFD has a team of fire investigators who work to determine the origin and cause of fires that occur in Scio Township. Determining how fires start can help to focus prevention efforts in the areas that can have the greatest impact on reducing loss from fire.

Station Tours

The Scio Township Fire Station is open for in-person tours! Drop-ins are welcome during regular office hours, or you may call the station at (734) 665-6001, to schedule a visit.

Reflective Signs

The STFD has available green address signs at a cost of $20.00. These signs are highly reflective and are visible from quite a distance at night or during times of reduced visibility. These signs can help us quickly locate your home or place of business. They are easily mounted to your mail box post, so please help us help you by stopping by to pick one up.

Annual Halloween Open House

Each year, the STFD hosts a Halloween Open House event, when upwards of 1;000 community members stop by to see the fire trucks, enjoy refreshments, entertainment, and meet the firefighters.

Child Safety Seat Inspections

The STFD does not install or inspect child safety seats. To find a car seat inspection clinic or to schedule an appointment click here

Disposal of Old or Expired Fire Extinguishers

The STFD does not accept old or expired fire extinguishers. Most old fire extinguishers can be disposed of by emptying the contents and disposing with your regular trash pickup. Some very old fire extinguishers may contain hazardous chemicals, and may have special disposal requirements. You can contact the fire department if you are unsure what chemicals are in your old fire extinguisher or how to dispose of it.

Disposal of Hazardous Materials/Waste

Washtenaw County holds regular hazardous waste collections. Information may be found here.

Disposal of Unwanted/Unneeded Medications

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department has a "Red Barrel" disposal site at the substation located at 1055 N Zeeb Rd. Unused medications can be disposed of at this location. More information may be found here.
