Using Your Digital Water Meter to Detect Water Leaks 

Your digital water meter can help you detect hidden leaks early--saving water, preventing costly damage, and keeping your water bill in check. Follow the steps below to check for leaks in your home using your digital meter.

Step 1: Make Sure No Water is Running

• Turn off all faucets, appliances, sprinklers, and toilets both inside and outside your home.
• Confirm that no one in your household is using water during this check.

Step 2: Locate and Read Your Digital Water Meter

• Your water meter is typically located in your basement.
• If you do not have a basement, it may be located in a utility closet or another accessible indoor space.
• Once located, open the lid of the meter and check the screen.

If you have a Metron digital meter:

• The display will show the word "FORWARD" if water is currently moving through your meter.
• If "FORWARD" appears while no water is in use, this may indicate a potential leak.

Step 3: Take a Time Test

1. Write down the current meter reading.
2. Ensure no one uses any water for 30 to 60 minutes.
3. Recheck the meter reading.
4. If the reading has increased, it's likely that water is flowing due to a leak.

Common Leak Sources

If you suspect a leak, check these common problem areas:

• Toilets (especially worn-out flappers or valves)
• Dripping faucets
• Irrigation or sprinkler systems
• Water softeners or filtration systems that cycle frequently
• Outdoor hoses or spigots left slightly open

Hydrant Flushing Notice

The Scio Township Utilities Department periodically performs routine fire hydrant flushing
throughout the Township as part of our ongoing maintenance program.

Why Do We Flush Hydrants?

Hydrant flushing is an essential part of our water system maintenance. It helps to:

• Ensure hydrants are operational and ready for emergency use
• Remove naturally occurring mineral buildup from water mains
• Maintain water clarity and quality

During flushing in your area, you may notice:

• Discolored or cloudy water - This is normal and temporary.
• Changes in water pressure - Pressure may drop slightly during flushing.
• Short periods of water disruption - This is rare and usually brief

What Should You Do?
• Avoid using water during flushing times in your area if possible.
• If your water is discolored:
o Run cold water from a faucet (preferably a basement or outside tap) for 5-10 minutes.
o Avoid doing laundry until water clears to prevent staining.
• If discoloration persists, contact the Utilities Department.
