The Environmental Sustainability Task Force is charged by the Planning Commission with formulating specific sustainability and climate goals, including goals for energy efficiency, renewable energy, carbon neutrality, and resiliency. The Task Force considers how to incorporate sustainability into new or revised ordinances, as well as assessing Township operations to identify opportunities and practices for reducing energy use and carbon emissions, and benefiting the environment.

"Scio Township commits itself to a just transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions due to township operations no later than 2030 and to the same goal through all sectors of the township by 2035." Resolution 2022-11, Declaring a Climate Emergency

Check out the current draft of  Scio Township’s Sustainability Climate Action Plan to learn more about what we are doing, together, to achieve a just transition to community-wide carbon neutrality by 2035.

As part of the annual Michigan Green Communities (MGC) Challenge, Scio Township achieved gold status in 2025 for exemplary action in multiple categories, including energy efficiency, climate resilience, recycling, mobility, environmental stewardship, and more. MGC guides and supports communities in adapting to a changing climate, protecting infrastructure, improving the quality of life for residents, and creating a more environmentally sustainable and economically competitive future for the state of Michigan.
